boaters, workshop participants and wwoofers. We respect and enjoy contact with wwoofers from all parts of the world. We fully appreciate the work you do for us and try our best to make it an equal exchange. We ask for four hours a day in exchange for room and board and transportation to and from Campbell River. The four hours can be at anytime of the day or put together if you want a full day off. The trip from Campbell River to Tahsis takes about three and a half hours. The boat ride from Tahsis to Nuchatlitz is in the "Kamella," a seventeen foot aluminum boat with a covered passenger area, and takes about forty five minutes. If the weather is rough, expect a somewhat bumpy ride. We are in the middle of Nuchatlitz Park, in a temperate rain forest off the west coast of Vancouver Island. Except for July and August, and herring season in March, the area is pretty much free of other people. Three of us live on the island year round. We only have two wwoofers at a time, and prefer couples or friends. We are gay and lesbian friendly. We prefer nonsmokers. We do not have a store or any cars on the island. Brian is 67 and I am 55. We are easy going and have traveled a lot and lived in other countries teaching ESL. Some German spoken. We have a small library with lots of different kinds of books for your use.
but it is not fully private (fold down couch in living room). At Nuchatlitz, we have a loft in the main cabin with lovely ocean views that can be closed off for your privacy. We are currently working on a separate living space for wwoofers in a building behind the cabin. It is at the top of a small cliff with an ocean and forest view. We provide vegetarian or non vegetarian meals, and fresh seafood when available. We have two outdoor hot water showers and a comfortable outhouse. The main cabin is right on the ocean with nice ocean views.
We do not have a farm. We are trying to establish a small organic garden at the back of the cabin. The work we ask for often depends on what the wwoofer is willing to do. Digging up salal roots or ferns, or digging a hole for a shrub can be really hard work requiring a mattock. Gathering seaweed, planting seedlings, or weeding is much easier. Whatever you do, please expect to get really dirty. We have a washer and dryer, but your clothes will never be the same, so please bring work clothes. Waterproof footwear is essential. We try to provide rubber boots. In all seasons of the year, rain gear is a must. We have some capes and extra pants but if you want to be really comfortable, you should bring your own rain gear.

We have a variety of non-gardening jobs that need to be done. Previous wwoofers have enjoyed nailing cedar shingles to the outside of new buildings, building a stone walkway to the beach, trail clipping, tending a big brush fire, or carpentry jobs. We are currently building a new deck and dining room and finishing a new outhouse and tool shed, so some carpentry skills are much appreciated. Light painting work or sanding floors or windowsills is also appreciated. We try to match jobs with the interests of our wwoofers. If you want to learn how to use a chainsaw, we always have beach combed logs that need to be cut into firewood.

We have "no-roll" kayaks, sometimes called "dry seat" kayaks or "sit on top" kayaks for your use. We also have a rowboat with a sculling seat. We provide a full orientation of weather and tidal currents etc. Some kayak routes are for beginners, others require experience. We have a trail system on our own island and the park has trails from one area to another. It is essential you exercise common sense when hiking or kayaking. We have bears and wolves on our island, and cougars in the area. Please see the rest of the web site for a full explanation.
We can accommodate four university students at reading break or spring break etc. for work parties. Possible work parties could include: Beach combing then cutting firewood, building a deck or a cabin platform, assembling a kit house, creating a raised garden bed, installing a new hot tub, making cement or cedar garden rounds for a new trail, assembling a green house etc.
