Cabin Accomodation and Food

Welcome to Sea Watch (locally called Witt’s End)

Our cabin a few years agoWe are in the middle of Nuchatlitz Park and part of the collective Nuchatlitz Enterprizes Inc. We bought our island (approx 50 acres) in 1974. Our section of the island (approx five acres) is located in a sheltered bay with a fabulous view to the nearby west coast. Witt's End cabin is on the edge of the ocean with a gravel beach for landing kayaks and small motorboats. Our float is anchored in the bay and is not attached to the beach.

The cabin is powered with solar energy and a back-up battery bank for 12 volt lighting. You can charge 120 volt electronic equipment and batteries from an inverter. The generator is available for the washer and dryer. We have four rooms heated with a wood stove. Wood floors, wood panelling, wooden cupboards etc. are throughout the cabin.

The cabin will be exclusively yours for the duration of your stay.

The Living Room & Kitchen

L shaped benchesThe KitchenThe living room has an oversized cozy chair, and an “L” shaped bench overlooking the ocean and main deck. The benches can be used for a spill-over sleeping area (bring your own sleeping bags). The living room also has a small kitchen with running water and a propane stove and kitchen table. The desk nook off one end of the kitchen has a pantry and propane fridge, a built-in desk with ocean view, and a small “hobbit” door that leads to a private east deck. Both the living room and desk nook have large windows for ocean viewing.

The loft

The LoftThe Loft (approx 400 square feet) has one queen size bed, two single futons, and a desk. One sleeping area is located in a dormer with quaint windows facing north, great for the occasional northern light display and perfect for star gazing from your bed. The loft has four skylights and both sides have large windows for ocean viewing.

The Greenhouse

The GreenhouseThe greenhouse with one queen sized bed, a desk, lots of books, an old fashioned sunken tub and french doors leading to the living room is a bright and cozy place to relax.

The Dining Area

A view of the garden from the dining roomThe Dining RoomOur dining area has three large windows overlooking a pleasant garden. Three skylights and additional windows complement the wooden dining table that can seat eight, the birch flooring, and cedar panelled walls. Books cover one wall, and a cozy chair-and-a-half futon (that can be changed into a single bed) provide a comfortable reading nook. Details include a candelabra, serving trolley, games, and magazines.

Bathing and Outhouse

The OuthouseStep out the dining room door to a cedar round path leading to the outhouse which has a washbasin and a pit toilet. Old fashioned windows, plants, a sloping roof and plenty of ventilation make this outhouse “rustic deluxe”. We have two outdoor showers. One is a solar shower on the edge of the garden and is open to the elements. The other has an on-demand water heater and curtains for privacy. Our tub in the greenhouse is mainly for use in winter as hot water comes from a water jacket in our wood burning stove.

Emergency and Medical Information

NUCHATLIZ IS A REMOTE AREA WITH LIMITED EMERGENCY SERVICE. Helicopter rescue depends on weather. The clinics in Tahsis and Zeballos have limited staff, but there is an ambulance service in both villages. We provide a small first aid kit. Please bring a comprehensive kit if you are at all concerned. You MUST supply your own medication for allergies, diabetes, bee stings etc. Please seriously consider not coming if you have a cat or cedar allergy. Our well water and the water we collect from our cistern needs to be boiled before drinking. Please bring your own drinking water. If you have a hand held marine radio, please bring it or we can provide one. All decks and cedar surfaces are extremely slippery when wet; please exercise caution. Please accept our apology but our premises are not suitable for toddlers or people with restricted mobility.

Food

We provide flour, sugar, tea and essential baking goods such as baking powder etc. You may use some canned goods if you run out. We recommend vac packed soymilk, rice dream, or “VHT ” milk (saves room in fridge). We have an organic-garden-in-progress and will share fresh greens when possible. We provide a small propane barbeque.

Other

We love dogs and cats and have a cat of our own. If your dog is well behaved, likes cats, and doesn't bark too much, you are welcome to bring him/her. Please consider wolves in the outlying area have attacked dogs in the past. We do not allow smoking in the cabin.

Boating and Hiking

Some of our small craftKayak trips and proper weather go together! We have one double and three single “no roll” kayaks. They are very stable and user friendly. A kayak trip around the island or to the beautiful “Grassy Knoll” is suitable for children or beginners. Hot summer weather often brings afternoon winds that can restrict beginning kayakers to the immediate island area. Cloudy weather often comes with calm waters perfect for kayaking to outlying islands. Our guests enjoy kayaking all year round. We have a network of trails on the island, but only some trials are available to guests (orientation provided). Please respect private property. Sea Watch has a private trail leading to a small and often very sunny meadow perfect for picknicking. The network of trails in the park connecting one area to another offer a variety of hiking challenges. Two nearby islands can be circumnavigated at low tide.
